The Lost Vikings wasn’t the start of Blizzard as a company, but it was the first game Blizzard released on PC. Blizzard was still called Silicon & Synapse for its first three games, and it wasn’t until Warcraft: Orcs & Humans that the company really went all-in on developing for the PC, though Lost vikings helped lay the groundwork for that. The game’s levels were created using a program called CED, a cell editor made by CEO Mike Morhaime that Blizzard used to lay out levels, which later went on to be the basis of the Warcraft and StarCraft map editor. Blizzard was also hired by Interplay Productions to create a scripting engine for developing platformers, which it then used for nearly all of its SNES games. But Morhaime recalled to us that Blizzard got much more use out of it than Interplay. “I think in the amount of time we did all those games, maybe they did one or two,” Morhaime said. “We were a lot faster with it.” But having a larger company help fund their engine development boosted the still relatively small team, at that point only a dozen or so people total.

Even if the studio wasn’t under a different name at the time, it would be easy to forget that Blizzard made The Lost Vikings. Its sequel in 1997 was the last platformer the studio ever made, and I only realized the connection when the game’s bumblingly heroic trio was resurrected for Heroes of the Storm. But even this early on, you can see traces of that distinct Blizzard style peek through. The bright colors and exaggerated proportions would let its characters fit right in with the Warcraft series, and the contrast of ye olden swords and shields with a sci-fi setting is oddly prophetic of Blizzard’s future ventures.

“When I started on Lost Vikings, there were about 100 vikings you could control. Some that would raise up ladders, some that would throw torches, all that sort of thing. "I think we learned some important design lessons that have become sort of part of the Blizzard culture now. Everyone at the company played The Lost Vikings over and over to help test and polish it. We saw what a huge impact that such attention to detail had on the game. We also learned that the people who program and design a game aren't the best judges of how difficult it is to play; they know the game too well. We had to constantly bring new people in and watch them play, especially with the early levels, to make sure they weren't too hard. Working on Vikings helped us remember the big picture: that a game, first and foremost, should be fun to play…that it should feel good and look good. The Lost Vikings was also our first attempt at adding a bit of humor to a game. We wanted each Viking to have some charm, so we came up with funny animations and interesting dialogue to give each character his own unique personality. SOME NEWS ABOUT I AM SETSUNA


When Square Enix revealed developer Tokyo RPG Factory at E3 2015, the publisher made the new team's goal clear: It was created to reclaim the legacy of Japanese role-playing games that had once made Square such a known and beloved name. But that's also a tall order. Many have argued that there's a reason the Japanese style of role-playing game has mostly shrunk into a relatively tiny niche audience.

To Tokyo RPG Factory's credit, none of that pressure to deliver can be felt in I Am Setsuna. This game is packed with plenty of throwbacks to Square's 16-bit glory days, but it also very much has its own identity. And that identity is one of an impressive if imperfect debut.
AN IMPRESSIVE IF IMPERFECT DEBUT
I Am Setsuna is set in a drab, snow-covered world, where once every 10 years or so, a sacrificial maiden must be sent on a pilgrimage and give her life to temporarily stop the threat of monsters wiping out the remnants of humanity. As the masked mercenary Endir, you've been tasked to assassinate the sacrifice in question.

Yeah, it's ... a pretty grim setup.

As things tend to go in RPGs, however, the tables get turned and Endir ends up joining that sacrifice — the titular Setsuna — as a member of the guard on her pilgrimage to the Last Lands. It's a journey that drags the small group to all corners of the world, pulling in a handful of new party members as you go.

All of this probably sounds by the books, and it is. The structure of I Am Setsuna is perhaps the bit that's most recognizably "old-school Japanese RPG." However, the game shines in the details; it's the first role-playing game of its style that I can remember playing in years where the plot actually pulled me through much more so than the mechanics or the excitement of discovery.

Once you get past the fairly generic opening hours, I Am Setsuna's characters grow into a surprisingly intriguing bunch, full of unexpected, secret motivations. I'm used to guessing my fair share of plot twists well in advance in RPGs, but here I found myself surprised by many of the reveals and by the directions the cast went in.

What impressed me the most is how warm I Am Setsuna felt by the end. For a game so somber and serious, it doesn't allow the gravity of the scenario to create distance between the player and the characters. Put another way: I was not exhausted and ready to be done by the end of the game, despite an overwhelming earnestness in the writing that could easily have worn thin.

Of course, part of my uninterrupted enjoyment of I Am Setsuna is thanks to excellent battle system. It uses Square's standard "active time battle" combat — basically, you watch a bar fill up in real time for each of your party members, and once it's full you can choose to swing your weapon, cast a spell or use an item. Taking a few cues from the Super Nintendo classic Chrono Trigger, if two characters in your currently active party have compatible spells, they can be combined into super-powerful combo attacks.


Nothing about these mechanics struck me as particularly outstanding or new, but the game has mastered the kind of simple, easy-to-understand, well-balanced RPG combat that is too easily underestimated. Most fights in I Am Setsuna consist only of the basics — attacking, healing, monitoring status effects like poison and so on — and yet they were some of the tensest and most satisfying battles I've had in ages. The boss fights, in particular, rest on that razor-thin border between requiring smart use of all resources and just being a frustrating pain in the ass. It's been a while since I've had an RPG remind me of how good that feels.

Other reminders of Square Enix's output over the last 10 years are less welcome. I Am Setsuna has a few underexplained and seemingly undercooked systems, such as momentum, which adds an element of timing to attacks in order to achieve extra damage, and singularities, which are random effects that can trigger for a short amount of time during battles. These mechanics, and a few others in the game, are confusing at their best. They're also entirely unnecessary to completing or enjoying the game, so I mostly ignored them.

The lack of environmental variety in I Am Setsuna is harder to handwave away. As previously mentioned, the game's world is covered in snow in all directions, so every town and outdoor field has the same frigid feel. That's well enough, but this extends to dungeons as well. The game boasts a grand total of maybe three or four dungeon "types" — an icy cavern, a treacherous mountain path, a strange, technologically advanced tower. These templates repeat several times, as do the handful of enemy types within them, draining the game of a sense of discovery and wonder.

Still, even when I was exploring a setting I was already overly familiar with, the presentation is gorgeous. I Am Setsuna's stylized characters and artsy world design sets it apart from the average, cheap-CGI look that many RPGs share. The art direction is aided by a lovely, piano-heavy soundtrack that really sells the game's melancholy tone.
WRAP UP:I AM SETSUNA IS A SOMBER YET JOYFUL NOSTALGIA TRIP
It's not a new classic by any stretch, but I Am Setsuna demonstrates a great understanding and mastery of what made Square Enix's past successes work so well. It might have benefited from stripping down the mechanics even more, or spending more resources creating a wider range of locations and enemies. But as it is, I Am Setsuna is a soft, sad experience that nonetheless filled me with joy. That should tell you everything.

Pokemon GO: How To Catch All Region Exclusive Pokemon

Catching them all in Pokemon GO is no easy feat, but this trick will help trainers snag all of the region exclusive Pokemon without leaving their own continent.

Although Pokemon GO is full of plenty of goals for players to achieve, many trainers are primarily interesting in catching them all. Currently that task if very difficult, even for the most dedicatedPokemon GO players, due to unreleased legendaries and region exclusive Pokemon. Luckily, the region exclusive barrier has some wiggle room.

Currently, there are four Pokemon that are considered region locked. Farfetch’d (Asia), Kangaskhan (Australia), Mr. Mime (Europe), and Tauros (North America) all seem to only be found in the wild in their respective regions. Although it seem to be impossible to find the three that are outside of your area of play in the nearby tool, many trainers are confirming that there is another way to add these ‘mon to the Pokedex.

According to reports from multiple players, including one who has caught every available Pokemon, the region exclusive characters can all be hatched from 10km eggs, regardless of the region where the egg was picked up. This has been a rumor since the game launched, but there are now enough reports and screenshots to confirm that the Pokemon are collectible from eggs outside of their regions.

The first step to unlocking the region exclusives is to collect some 10km eggs. 10km eggs are randomly dropped at Pokestops just like 2km and 5km eggs, but are more rare and obviously take a lot longer to hatch for the average player. If you don’t have a 10km egg to get started, we recommend you visit a nearby crowded area of Pokestops and start spinning until one is dropped.

Hatching 10km eggs is no small feat, especially since the GPS-based distance tracking isn’t the most reliable, but players should be able to acquire all the region exclusive Pokemon locally by putting in some serious mileage. The fastest way to get them all definitely requires spending some Pokecoins on additional egg incubators.

Every player has one egg incubator with infinite uses, but additional incubators cost 150 and only have three uses. If you’re going to buy additional egg incubators, the best strategy is to hatch 2km eggs from the infinite incubators and use the the limited incubators for the rare 10km eggs to get the most bang for your buck. This strategy still requires a lot of luck, but it’s good to know that it’s at least possible to collect them all without spending hundreds of dollars on plane tickets.

Fury Road Survivor is open-world driving combat and an explosions of pixels. Mad Max for mobile... anyone?

Fury Road Survivor glistens with voxels of beauty. I am finding it hard to believe that a game with voxels can look so impressive, but it does. The sand shimmers, explosions skyrocket into the air and mobile combat couldn't be finer. If you like recently released driving games like Pako Car Chase Simulator or Splash cars, then you will want to look into Fury Road Survivor by Tiny Games.
Tiny Games is based in Rome, Italy. They have produced multiple mobile games such as Impossible Lines and more recently, Geometry Cut. Fury Road Survivor should catapult them into another zone, as this game is fun to play, has plenty of visual appeal and can be tough as nails. If you like your driving game full of action, Fury Road Survivor is your type of game.
The game starts out pretty simple. It is you and your vehicle in a desert-like wasteland. There are abandoned vehicles, dunes, portions of old roads and overpasses, pieces of buildings and anything else you could imagine. It is all about evading your pursuers as long as you can. There are barrels of oil scattered around the environment too. These are pretty important as they are used to upgrade your vehicle and your weapons. I wish there were a mini-map indicating where these blue barrels were, it would make it a little bit more interesting and strategic when it comes to gameplay. It is all out war against your enemies. If you think the game looks a little bit like the setting for the latest Mad Max movie, or the original for that matter, you would be correct. Guess what? Tiny Games totally nails it. I don't know if that was there intention, but is a complimentary nod in the right direction in my opinion.
The environment can feel stark at times, but at no time do you think these graphics aren't great. The sand blows in the wind, you have dunes that you can use to launch your car into other vehicles, and the pace at which the game moves is perfect. There are areas where the desert turns into more a covered green landscape. You cannot linger there, because you will quickly find out that those areas are toxic. Your vehicle starts sputtering green chunks, and if you hang out there too long, it will be game over.

There isn't much of a story at all to the game. You will start off in different areas of the world map each time. There are only two controls n the game. There is an arrow for turning right and an arrow for turning left. That is it. The vehicle accelerates and backs up on its own. I do wish there were a few more control options in the game, but for what is presented, it works fairly well. You will find yourself running into various objects and getting stuck at times. The first thing you want to do is to try to reverse and turn around. If you wait a moment, your car will begin to back up on its own. Unfortunately, it is never fast enough because the villains are hot on your heels. This is where it is important to have support in the game. What I mean by support is some kind of fire power. Which takes us back to the precious barrels of oil/fuel.
In many free to play games, the in-game currency is a little bit hard to obtain through regular gameplay. If there were more barrels around you could upgrade your equipment faster. The only other options you have at this point are to watch an ad, which will net you twenty points, or you can spend real money to either buy different vehicles or armaments for your vehicle. It takes one hundred points to be able to buy a piece of equipment. You will be familiar with how it is done. You pay and a dual wheel spins. Depending on where it stops, you will either get a common, uncommon, rare or mysterious vehicle or armament for your car. You will then be able to rotate through your vehicles or armaments to set you up before speeding out into the desert. Can you enjoy the game without doing that? You certainly can, but your driving skills had better be pretty good. Vehicles and upgrades start just north of $1.00 and go up to just under $5.00 for each item, if you are interested in spending real cash.
Overall Fury Road Survivor is a fun game to play. Tiny Games has put together a really impressive looking game that is unique, and that is saying a lot, considering how many driving games that are available.  Fury Road Survivor is integrated with Google Game Play Services. You have one leaderboard that you can compete on. Currently there are no in-game achievements to unlock. The game is also integrated with EverPlay, should you choose to record your gameplay. As a free-to-play game, Fury Road Survivor is definitely worth a look. The game does not feel like it is pay-to-play or pay-to-win. It would be nice to be able to get a few more barrels thrown our way, so that we can mix up the combat a bit with more weapons and cars. If you want to switch it up, be ready to watch a few ads. The gameplay is still rewarding, though a bit brief, due to some really tough enemies you need to outmaneuver.

Most of the solitaire games are free and it's so easy to play solitaire online as long as you want to, except for Sage Solitaire. There's games that are described as roguelikes, and have permadeath, but they tend to be forgivable in how they work. Mostly in that once you die, you can play them again. Leave it to Zach Gage's Sage Solitaire [Free] to redefine permadeath...in a card game. The new update adds 2 new modes, Vegas mode and True Grit mode, both centered around gambling in the game. But True Grit mode is unique in that if you run out of money in it, you can't play it ever again. (Read about plant facts)


That's right. You can wager money on games to get bigger rewards for the points you get and the solitaire games you complete, with different multiplier bonuses for the different piles you clear. There's leaderboards for the people who amass the most money, too. In Vegas mode, if you run out of money, you can reset and start over. But in True Grit mode, if you run out of money, that's it. Game over. You can't play it again. And the game does iCloud, so don't think you can just sign in to another device and play it there. No, maybe there's a way around it, but it won't be easy to do. Both Vegas and True Grit mode are available for free in the new Sage Solitaire update, available now.

Weird Contraption By Aaqib - Independent Review

Game review - Most games made nowadays lack the multi-million dollar budgets of the AAA industry, meaning that the independent scene has had to adapt in order to compete in other aspects. This has resulted in a rise of the number of ‘quirky games’ as developers bid to charm the money out of your pockets (typically with goat mothers and skeleton brothers). Though usually lacking in breadth, these titles provide a depth of experience that a hundred-person strong project couldn’t possibly have. Aaqib’s Weird Contraption is one such game blessed with this quirk factor, being about as quirky as they come.

The idea behind Weird Contraption is as simple as it is odd; you must explore the young Albert Einstein’s mind and solve the puzzles within. This concept is interesting for a number of reasons, the most important of which is how its uniqueness allowed Aaqib to base some interesting design choices around it. By far the most noticeable of these is the way in which the story is given through fragmented thoughts as opposed to your run-of-the-mill exposition. This makes for a nice change and contributes to Weird Contraption’s deeper themes better than other, more standard methods of narrative delivery. The well-chosen background track and wonderfully unique puzzles also do a great job of bringing the concept to life, combining to create a thoroughly enjoyable and challenging experience.

It’s apparent that Aaqib clearly understood the theme that they were working with, and nowhere is this more clearly conveyed than through the level design. It’s in equal parts attractive and practical, being just as zany as the rest of the game while maintaining balance and harmony. More importantly though, it doesn’t interfere with the gameplay; the item placement is great and most of the important game elements are easily accessible, making puzzles more fun than tedious. On top of this, the level’s length is perfect considering the difficulty, being brief enough as to not be annoying but long enough to be challenging. Overall, the game is well designed both visually and mechanically, adhering closely to its central concept.

However, the level’s design does have a few major flaws, the most prominent of which is the low lighting level. In other games this isn’t usually a problem, but in Weird Contraption it occasionally obscures important gameplay elements, making progression woefully unclear. This is especially crippling at a point early in the game, where the way past a particularly dangerous trap is impossible to find without death or dumb luck. This isn’t helped by the fact that the switch (which itself is never visible) required to bypass the trap only triggers by chance. The result is a puzzle that is infuriatingly unreliable, driving less persistent players away and unfairly skewing the game’s difficulty curve.

The layout also poses a few other minor issues, including an annoying habit of obscuring lethal traps from the player’s vision. This however is a minor complaint compared to how tightly-packed the game’s areas are, which reveals certain narrative elements before their time and occasionally confuses the player even more than the poor lighting. This closeness also reduces the amount of thinking time the player has between sections, causing them to be launched too soon into challenges they haven’t been able to prepare for. These flaws cloud a player’s experience of Weird Contraption, which is otherwise a very solid and enjoyable game.

Minjaze's Ultimate Quest

Hey guys, Demonxz95 here welcoming you to my review of Bravequest by Minjazemunka241981, better known as Minjaze or Arcanus. He's a very well known member on the forums, but he isn't as well known here on the MS. Despite that though, he does have a few features prior to this one. This is his first (and at the time of writing this review, his only) Arcade game. However I still had hope because of Minjaze's game making skills when used and having been a part of Sploder for almost 3 and a half years now, I reckon Minjaze did use the Arcade creator before this game was made. But without further ado, let us get into the review.
Review

I'm going to be completely honest, when I first saw the thumbnail for this game and lack of scenery in the first stage, I was a bit disappointed. I know there isn't much you can do to the thumbnail for an Arcade game (as it's always the first stage of the game) but I think more scenery could've been put in there. However, after playing a little bit of the first stage, it did get a LOT better from there and when I saw some of the cool gameplay of the game, I started really having fun and liking the game a lot, to the point where I was smiling while I was playing. I first thought the game was going to be short when I saw that the first two levels of the game only had one stage in it, but the length definitely picked up on stage 3 in which there was multiple stages which were not only fairly long in length, but also provided a decent challenge. Not like One Hit Kevin levels of challenge, more like your normal featured Arcade game type of challenge. The difficulty was balanced and curved nicely. Either that or I'm just really good at this game. Probably a bit of both.

The story line of the game is, well someone's trying to destroy a town from Dr N Archy (a pun of the word "anarchy" and a reference to Crash Bandicoot). It's cliche but I can live with it, and I love me some Crash Bandicoot references.

The scenery of this game is brilliant, especially thanks to the help of the custom texture creator which allows you to create whatever type of textures you want for certain land mass objects instead of having to use the default ones. When it was first implemented, I was very "eh" about the addition but now I see it as a very positive one. Using the texture creator allows the ability to make stages that you otherwise wouldn't normally be able to make such as like a volcanic cave.

Really good games tend to be really fun to play and this game is no exception. Once you play a small bit of the game, you'll sooner or later find yourself spending more time on the game and wanting to complete more of because you have so much fun playing it.

So that concludes my Game review of Bravequest by Minjaze. Try this game out, it's a very good game. I mean, it's an Arcade and unpopular opinion, but the Arcade is my favorite creator, and it's probably my strongest one in terms of game making.

Resident Evil 7 could have been too scary in VR, says Capcom

Game director reveals the team was aware of the user experience being different when in virtual reality

Those creating Resident Evil 7 were aware of the extra intensity horror experiences can create when played in virtual reality, and as such make the game too scary.
Asked on Capcom-Unity if the team was concerned about making the game too scary, game director Kōshi Nakanishi laughed then said: "You take responsibility if you choose to play in PSVR Mode. Whether you think you’re ready for it or not is up to you to decide.
"We certainly did have feelings at some points where we thought it was possible to push it too far in VR with horror."
Nakanishi also explained that the team has to "optimise the [VR] experience to make it comfortable and as immersive as possible," though the "game itself is the same" no matter what system you play on.
Producer Masachika Kawata also believes "VR is a really good match for horror".
He added: "When we first got it implemented we were all so excited to try it out, put on the headset, and get into the horror experience. You have to try it out for yourself to figure out how immersive it is and how you feel like you're right there in the room."
